How do I check my home’s electrical safety before summer?
Check that every AC has its own breaker, that switches and plugs are not warm or discoloured, that your DB has MCBs and an earth-leakage (RCD) breaker, that earthing is connected, and that UPS and solar wiring is protected. If anything trips, buzzes or smells of burning, call an electrician.
12-point checklist
- Each AC on its own breaker
- No warm, discoloured or melted plugs and switches
- DB has MCBs, not old rewireable fuses
- An RCD/earth-leakage breaker protects socket circuits
- Earthing connected and tested
- No joints taped outside junction boxes
- UPS wired on a separate circuit
- Geyser and kitchen appliances on suitable circuits
- Outdoor lights and sockets weather-protected
- No extension boards powering heavy appliances
- Solar DC cables protected from sun and rodents
- Breakers labelled so you can switch off quickly
When to call an electrician
Repeated tripping, burning smells, buzzing from the DB, shocks from appliances or flickering lights all need a professional check.

Frequently asked questions
How often should home wiring be checked?
A basic inspection every year before summer is sensible, and immediately after any burning smell, shock or repeated tripping.
What is an RCD?
A residual current device cuts power within milliseconds when current leaks to earth, which protects people from serious shocks.
